AT&T now accepts payment in Crypto via BitPay.

A longstanding mobile service provider has teamed up with BitPay to accept bill payments in Cryptocurrency. AT&T Inc. is American multinational conglomerate holding company headquartered at Whitacre Tower in Downtown Dallas, Texas. If you know of Tmobile or Verizon wireless, you most likely know of AT&T.  Currently, the brand is the largest multichannel video service provider in the US by total subscribers (over 22 million subscribers to their credit). The company was incorporated by Bell Telephone Company in October 1983 and has garnered subsidiaries like DIRECTV, AT&T Mobility, WarnerMedia and more.

The telecom giant announcing that it will accept bill payments in the form of crypto (by way of BitPay) has probably pointed other contenders toward the crypto radar as it revealed this on Thursday. A spokesperson of AT&T in an interview said:

“BitPay provides payment processing services for merchants and is one of the largest bitcoin payment processors in the world. Our customers are on this platform and we are always looking for different ways to better serve our customers.”

The crypto option is however not being extended to other AT&T services such as buying phones or other devices and BitPay won’t work in AT&T’s storefronts yet. The company did note in a statement that the new offering is intended to give its customers a preferable option to pay in cryptocurrency since their customers use them.

Vice president at AT&T, Kevin McDorman:

“We’re always looking for ways to improve and expand our services,” “We have customers who use cryptocurrency, and we are happy we can offer them a way to pay their bills with the method they prefer.”

Slowly bitcoin acceptance has crept into different industries that may seem incompatible with blockchain technology where bitcoin emerged from, and now it’s in the telecom industry. So long as the language of ‘business’ is understood by all, it may soon become more than 'a trend for a while' to deal with transactions through bitcoin.
