The ‘Girls in ICT’ Day is celebrated internationally, every year on the fourth Thursday of April and was observed this year on 25 April 2019. It is an initiative backed by all ITU Member States in ITU Plenipotentiary Resolution 70 (Rev. Dubai, 2018). It objectifies the encouragement and empowerment of the girl child or young women to consider studies and careers in the growing field of ICTs. This enables mutual benefit for the girls who will easily find training opportunities and job/IT placements and technology for companies who will gain greater female participation in the ICT sector.
The ITU Secretary-General has implored the ITU Member States, Sector Members, Associates and Academia to organize events/forums that will attract as many girls and young women as possible. So far, Over 357,000 girls and young women have previously taken part in more than 11,100 celebrations of International Girls in ICT Day in 171 countries globally.
During the ”This Is Me – The Tech Talk”, a programme organized by her firm to commemorate the International Girls In ICT Day (#GirlsInICT)the Coordinating Managing Director, Technology Distributions Ltd.,
Mrs. Chioma Chimere gave the advice on Thursday in Lagos saying,
”The girl-child should pursue a career in ICT because the opportunities are limitless, and it gives her the platform to be herself, to express herself and also be a woman, a wife, and a mother at the same time. I think the opportunities are there already because the ICT industry is such that admits its kind, it is attractive. So long as you are mentally prepared for it, then you can harness the opportunities. Most times it is not a question of educational qualification. You don’t have to be an Electrical Electronics Engineer or a Computer Engineer to find a career in ICT. I am a graduate of English Language and Literature and I have been in IT for 23 years. So it goes beyond what one is studying. It is for people who are open to change, people who are open to doing things and people who are open to dynamism. Our industry is very dynamic. So any woman who is hardworking and dynamic in character would flourish naturally in ICT.”
In a male-dominated world, it is heart-warming to come across initiatives that will groom females to be in the same standing of a core sector like technology.
